The Department of Livestock & Fisheries Services

Zambia’s Department of Fisheries, Livestock, and Veterinary Services (DFLVS) under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MFL) drives sustainable development in these sectors for national food security, economic growth, and poverty reduction by managing resources, providing veterinary care, promoting aquaculture, and supporting farmers and traders in producing quality fish and livestock products for local consumption and export. They focus on improving production, ensuring safety, enhancing market access, and implementing policies for vibrant fisheries (like in Kafue, Kariba, Luapula basins) and livestock systems.

Key Functions & Activities

  • Veterinary Services: Disease control, animal health, safe trade in animals/products, promoting disease-free zones.
  • Fisheries Management: Conserving and developing fish stocks, managing major fisheries (Kafue, Kariba, etc.), promoting sustainable aquaculture.
  • Livestock Development: Implementing livestock policies, improving production, managing rangelands, promoting animal welfare.
  • Market & Value Chain Support: Providing market info, developing infrastructure, post-harvest management, linking farmers to finance.
