The Department of Public Health

The Department of Public Health manages crucial public health (sanitation, waste, pest control, food safety) and deliver primary healthcare (maternal/child, vaccinations, disease prevention) through Health Services and Public Health sections, bridging national goals with community needs, ensuring clean environments, promoting healthy living, and coordinating local health facilities and emergency responses under acts like the Local Government Act.

Key Functions & Responsibilities

  • Health Services Section: Offers curative & preventive care via clinics/posts, manages nurses, provides basic diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and oversees district hospitals/health centers.
  • Public Health Section: Focuses on environmental health (waste, sanitation, vector control), health promotion, inspections (food safety, liquor), and managing burials/funeral services.
  • Disease Prevention: Runs campaigns and programs for HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, maternal/child health, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
  • Community Engagement: Conducts health education, social mobilization, and behavior change initiatives.
  • Regulatory Role: Ensures adherence to public health standards through inspectorates.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Manages responses to public health emergencies and disease outbreaks.
